Best brains in ...

Corporate banking for borrowers and lenders; restructuring and turnaround; applying experience and expertise in banking and corporate insolvency in other contexts - such as major outsourcings and complex commercial arrangements, as well as helping to structure transactions and arrangements at the outset. Often regarded by colleagues as 'Mr. Fixit'.

Highlight of your career so far?

Advising a major global manufacturer on strategy to deal with the impending collapse of a major supplier.

Most challenging job you've ever done?

Advising a global client on the £300 million+ vendor debt aspects of the divestment of a major UK household name brand. There were a lot of big egos about in the negotiations, but I was able to help cut through all that and get the right result for our client - and the other parties for that matter.

What about outside the UK?

Going to upstate Nevada to fight a foreclosure which would have affected our client's security over a piece of scrubland covered in tumbleweed!

What's your definition of going the extra mile... And when have you done it?

Working on the £100 million+ financing of a major buyout from an aerospace manufacturer from a standing start on 24 December and completing on New Year's Eve 1999, including a 48-hour stretch at the end. The finance lawyers and bankers got the financing done in time to go off and celebrate the millennium, leaving the corporate guys to slug it out between themselves.

When have you ever given a client a real competitive edge?

Clients operate in the real world. It is not enough to understand the client's business. It is also necessary to have a genuine interest in what's going on both politically and economically on the global stage to be able to understand the context in which our clients operate.

What's your single greatest contribution to Wragge & Co's corporate responsibility?

Chair of the Board of Governors at the new University of Worcester. We are building a new campus, together with a library and history centre to be shared with the general public, which will be the first of its kind in Europe. The total project will be in the order of £180 million, and will be a major contribution to the transformation and regeneration of Worcester city centre.

What's been written or said about you that you're most proud of?

'Does not allow his strong technical ability to get in the way of his commercial side' and 'can get things done without any fuss' (Chambers UK).
